This standard includes ISO 9001:2015 quality management system requirements and specifies additional aviation, space, and defense industry requirements, definitions, and notes. It is emphasized that the requirements specified in this standard are complementary (not alternative) to customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements. One of the benefits of AS9100 certification is that every certified company is included in the Online Aerospace Supplier Information System (OASIS), which is maintained by the IAQG. This is a searchable database available to any company in the aerospace industry that is looking to qualify new vendors or surveil existing vendors.

Getting registered to AS9100D involves five steps:

2. Implement your processes and procedures

3. Audit yourself to ensure that you are following your own processes and procedures

4. Close any gaps found during your audit

5. Have a third party "registrar" audit your system to verify compliance and issue a certificate
